Synopsis
Prompted by the unearthing of a human skull in the woods near his house, Bill Reyner begins an investigation into a 20-year-old unsolved murder. Unlike the police, he becomes involved with the characters associated with the deed. His entanglement deepens, as does his knowledge of the case. Joining the deadly and insane cult, he intends to trap them, only to find the tables are turned and he becomes the quarry. At every turn, the Mania is ahead of him. With full knowledge of their actions but no physical evidence, he has nowhere to hide and no one to call for help. Bill's only option is to fight them on their own terms.
Mania
Placing a handkerchief over my face to protect my nose, I entered the shack once more, but this time armed with portable light. The dark room turned out to be a hovel. Filth and junk piled all around and a bed with unwashed sheets and filthy blankets. The room had flies that bugged me as I walked in. The light startled them and they began buzzing around. In the far corner stood the cause of the stench. For a moment I remained transfixed by the horror highlighted by my flashlight beam. There, still sitting in his wheelchair, sat the grotesque and very dead body of a man. A large knife buried deep in his chest gave me the hint that he was not in the best of health. His head sort of lolled backwards with his eyes open. Flies and insects were crawling all over it. Suddenly feeling excruciatingly sick I fled from the building. My heart raced and my stomach felt screwed up in a ball and it had a very strong urge to deposit its contents.
